Bulgarian cinema / culture

Apart from a few exceptions where I followed my heart and wrote on what I find of interest, most of what I have published on Bulgarian film and culture has been commissioned in various contexts — survey chapters, media industries, issues of news production and representational discourses, small countries film industries, and so on. I would have loved to follow Bulgarian cinema more closely, especially as I think it has some unique charactertistics that remain overlooked. However, as I am based abroad, access to the films has been quite difficult over the years. I am grateful to friends in Sofia, Plovdiv and Turnovo for helping out, as well as to the filmmakers who shared their work with me. In 2006 I co-edited a special issue of the online journal Kinokultura with the late Ron Holloway (http://www.kinokultura.com/specials/5/bulgarian.shtml), and in 2008 I published a short book entitled NEW BULGARIAN CINEMA.

I am now putting together my Top Ten Favourite Bulgarian Films List, so more writing on Bulgarian matters is forthcoming soon..
